Technical notes on BMW key programming
- EWS (1995-2003): first-generation BMW immobiliser, programmed via OBD with relative ease.
- CAS1 to CAS4+ (2003-2014): Car Access System used on E-series, F-series and early G-series. CAS3+ and CAS4 require encrypted ISN access; DKP uses dedicated tooling to read the ISN.
- FEM/BDC (2014+): Front Electronic Module / Body Domain Controller, used on F-series and G-series. The most advanced BMW platform — requires module reading, often by bench programming, to clone or add a key.
- Comfort Access: proximity-based entry. Each new key must be paired with the FEM/BDC and the antenna network.
- Display Key: bidirectional communication with the car — requires a fully active OEM remote and Wi-Fi pairing.

How long does a BMW key replacement take?
A BMW key replacement typically takes 60 to 180 minutes depending on the model and the immobiliser generation (CAS, FEM/BDC). Total key loss on a recent BMW with FEM/BDC can take up to 3 hours due to encrypted ECU programming.
Can DKP programme a BMW key without the original?
Yes. DKP technicians cut and programme new BMW keys without the original, even in the case of total key loss. We work directly via OBD or, on FEM/BDC vehicles, through ECU access to write a new key onto the immobiliser.
How much does a BMW key fob cost?
