Technical notes on Mercedes key programming
- FBS3 (2003-2016): uses an EIS module (Electronic Ignition Switch). Each new key needs the EIS password — readable via dedicated tools at your location.
- FBS4 (2017+): brand new architecture using EZS module and stronger encryption. Requires bench-style programming with certified equipment.
- Infrared communication: Mercedes IR keys communicate via the infrared LED on the front of the key — keep the front clean for reliable operation.
- Keyless-Go: proximity-based unlocking. Each new key is paired with the antennas and the EZS.
- Stolen key protection: DKP can deactivate stolen keys on most Mercedes models, securing the vehicle against repeat theft attempts.

How long does a Mercedes key replacement take?
A Mercedes-Benz key replacement typically takes 90 to 180 minutes. FBS3 vehicles can be programmed via OBD while FBS4 (post-2017) requires EIS/EZS reading and bench programming, which can extend the job to 3 hours.

What is the FBS4 immobiliser?
