Lorry / HGV key lost: what to do? Guide 2026

October 2026 7 min de lecture Professionals

Lost your lorry or HGV key? DKP attends directly on site to cut and program a new key, avoiding the tow of a heavy goods vehicle and several days of dealer downtime. Call-out 24/7 across Europe, quote depending on the vehicle, price quoted before the call-out.

For a haulier or a construction firm, a lost HGV key is not a minor inconvenience: it is a lorry at a standstill, a run that does not leave, a site deprived of its delivery. Every hour of downtime is expensive. The issue here is less the price of the key than the speed of getting the vehicle moving again, and that is exactly where an on-site call-out changes everything.

Why a HGV's downtime costs more than the key itself

On a private car, losing the key is mainly a personal problem. On a heavy goods vehicle, it is a link in the operation that seizes up. A tractor unit at a standstill means a loaded trailer waiting, a driver paid not to drive, sometimes late-delivery penalties. Towing a 44-tonne vehicle to the nearest dealer represents a high logistics cost, on top of several days' wait to obtain a key ordered from the factory.

The mobile call-out reverses this logic: the technician comes to the lorry, not the other way round. Downtime is then counted in hours, not days.

A whole fleet affected?

If you manage a fleet, every vehicle off the road weighs on your schedule. We can attend at the depot to replace lost keys and build preventive spares, to limit the risk of unplanned downtime. See our guide on the mobile auto locksmith 24/7.

The immobilisers of modern HGVs

Recent lorries have little in common with the HGVs of the 1990s. Most current tractor units and rigids carry an electronic immobiliser: the key contains a transponder that must be recognised by the vehicle's ECU to allow starting. Depending on the generation, you find keys with an integrated remote and, on the most recent cabs, advanced systems unique to each manufacturer.

Replacing a lorry key in total loss therefore means reading the ECU security data then programming a new chip, work that requires diagnostic equipment matched to the make and generation of the lorry.

Key and tachograph: two separate matters

A confusion comes up often: no, replacing an ignition key has nothing to do with the tachograph or the driver card. The tachograph records driving times via a personal smart card; the ignition key simply opens and starts the vehicle. A lost lorry key is replaced without touching the tachograph's regulatory data.

How the on-site call-out works

  1. You contact us; we identify the make, model and year of the HGV to prepare the right equipment.
  2. You get the registration document and company paperwork ready: a systematic check that protects the vehicle owner.
  3. The technician travels to where the vehicle is immobilised (depot, motorway services, worksite).
  4. Connection to the ECU, reading of the security data, then cutting and programming of the new key.
  5. Full test of the ignition and locking before putting the lorry back on the road.

Every DKP technician is trained in-house at the DKP Académie and each call-out is covered by professional liability insurance (RC Pro). The methods are non-destructive: no forced drilling, no damage to the cab.

How much does a lost HGV key cost?

Unlike a car, there is no universal flat rate for a heavy goods vehicle: the make, the vehicle generation and the type of immobiliser make the work vary too much. For an HGV we therefore provide a quote depending on the vehicle rather than a price announced blind. The DKP principle stays the same: the price is set and communicated before the call-out, with no surprises. Contact us with the registration document in hand for a precise estimate.

Volvo, Scania, MAN, DAF, Renault Trucks, Iveco, Mercedes Actros

Our technicians work across all the major European HGV manufacturers: Volvo Trucks, Scania, MAN, DAF, Renault Trucks, Iveco and Mercedes-Benz Actros, whether long-distance tractor units or distribution rigids. The diagnostic equipment is selected according to the make and generation, to program the key correctly first time.

DKP, a European network built for professionals

DrKeyPro (DKP) is a technology-driven auto locksmith platform, founded by Mustapha and Mohamed EL-GARNI, covering more than 120 car makes, 50 motorbike makes and the whole European heavy-goods fleet, across a network of 11 European countries. For hauliers and firms, this coverage means a single point of contact able to attend a tractor unit as readily as a delivery van or a company car.

Frequently asked questions

Can a HGV key be replaced on site without going to the dealer?
Yes, in most cases. The DKP technician travels directly to wherever the lorry is, reads the immobiliser data and programs a new key on site, avoiding a costly HGV tow and several days of dealer downtime.
How much does a lost lorry key cost?
The price depends heavily on the make, the vehicle generation and the type of immobiliser. For an HGV we provide a quote depending on the vehicle rather than a flat price: contact us with the registration document for a precise estimate. The price is always quoted before the call-out.
Does the key control the tachograph too?
No. The ignition key and the tachograph driver card are two separate things. Replacing a lost lorry key does not touch the tachograph data: it only restores access to and starting of the vehicle.
Does DKP work on every HGV make?
Yes: Volvo, Scania, MAN, DAF, Renault Trucks, Iveco and Mercedes Actros, as well as the tractor units and rigid trucks of these manufacturers. The diagnostic equipment is matched to each generation of immobiliser system.
How long is a lorry off the road?
With an on-site call-out, downtime is generally measured in hours rather than days. The technician arrives according to the vehicle's location, then programs the key on site, avoiding a tow and the wait for a workshop appointment.
