A blade snapping inside the lock cylinder: what actually happens?
A car key, unlike a house key, has to withstand mechanical stress that few drivers ever consider. The flat blade (HU83 on recent PSA models, VA2 on early-2000s Renaults, HU100 on the Opel/GM group) is machined from a calibrated brass designed to resist a rotational torque of around 8 N·m. Beyond that — when you force a seized, frozen or misaligned lock cylinder — the blade always fails at the same point: the junction between the plastic head and the bit shoulder, where the metal is thinnest.
In practice, in 7 out of 10 jobs we attend, the fragment lodges between the first and third pin of the barrel. That's good news: at this depth, extraction is still achievable without dismantling. The remaining 30% are more complex cases, notably breaks flush with the barrel (no purchase to grip) and ruptures inside the steering lock (anti-theft cylinder), where the blade enters an internal cage that's hard to reach without removing the column.
Common mistake to avoid: grabbing pliers and trying to pull on the protruding piece of blade. That's exactly what you must not do. Lateral pressure twists the remaining metal, wedges it between the pins and turns a 20-minute extraction into a full cylinder replacement costing €250+.
Why this happens to you — by brand and model
In the field, certain vehicle + season combinations come up time and again. Here's what we see:
- Peugeot 207, 208 I, Citroën C3 II/III — original HU83 blade in soft brass, prone to bit wear after 7-8 years. Typical break: driver's door cylinder, in winter, at -2°C.
- Renault Clio III, Mégane II, Twingo II — ID46-transponder keys whose VA2 blade is crimped onto a plastic head that cracks. The blade often snaps at the head/metal junction.
- BMW E46, E60, E90 (diamond keys) — the HU92 blade is more robust, but the boot lock cylinder is exposed to condensation. A case seen many times: a key snapping cleanly in the boot during emergency use after a flat battery.
- Volkswagen Golf IV, Polo 9N, Skoda Fabia I — factory HU66 blade fairly reliable, but low-cost copies bought online (poorly treated Chinese brass) break in 30% of cases from the second year.
- Mercedes Vito, Sprinter — long HU64 key, vulnerable to torsion. On construction-site vans, the blade often breaks in the ignition after a forced cold start.

The copied-key factor: why the cheap online duplicate ends up broken
A key supplied by a €12 online cutting site is rarely cut to manufacturer's specification. Original cutting precision is ±0.02 mm. On low-cost copies, it easily climbs to ±0.1 mm. The blade enters the cylinder, turns with friction, but mechanically stresses the bits and eventually snaps — often at the worst possible moment, and always inside the barrel.

What you absolutely must not try before we arrive
- Do not pull on the fragment with all-purpose pliers — you'll push it in further.
- Do not spray WD-40 into the lock. The solvent attacks the pin lubrication, and the lock will seize over the following weeks.
- Do not use a toothpick, needle or paperclip to push the fragment back: it will end up wedged against the first pin, out of reach even for a hook.
- Do not turn the spare key in the same barrel — you risk breaking a second blade.
- If you are in an unsafe area (overnight car park, roadside), stay close to the vehicle until we arrive rather than calling a generic breakdown service: most will smash the window thinking it's cheaper.

Frequent technical questions
Can a broken key be extracted without damaging the lock cylinder?
In the vast majority of jobs, yes. We use double-hook extractors and ultra-thin Lishi-type pliers that grip the fragment's grooves without touching the pins. The lock remains fully functional after extraction. Cases that force a cylinder replacement are rare — around 10 to 15% — and mainly involve fragments pushed in beyond 12 mm or locks that were already forced before we arrived.
Why does a car key break inside the lock?
Three causes dominate. First, key bit wear: brass keys (Renault, older Peugeot models) fatigue after 8 to 10 years of use and eventually snap at the base. Second, frost and corrosion: a damp lock cylinder in winter mechanically jams the blade, and normal pressure is enough to break it. Third, forcing a bent key in a misaligned lock — often seen on BMW E46 boots and Mégane II doors. Low-cost copies bought online statistically aggravate the problem.
How long does the extraction and re-cutting take?
The extraction itself takes 10 to 35 minutes depending on the fragment's position and the type of lock. Re-cutting a mechanical key takes an extra 20 to 40 minutes. If your vehicle uses a transponder (most models since 1998), allow another 30 to 75 minutes for immobiliser programming via OBD. Average total for a complete job: 60 to 120 minutes.
Does my insurance cover this type of work?
Many policies include a 'key assistance' or 'non-mechanical breakdown' cover that reimburses extraction and supply of a new key. Premium policies (LCL, AXA, Maaf) typically reimburse up to €400 on an itemised invoice. DKP always issues a fully compliant VAT invoice in your name, suitable for your claim.
Can a fragment be extracted from the ignition (steering lock)?
Yes, but it's trickier. The steering lock (anti-theft device) is recessed inside the column and only accepts the blade at shallow depth. When the fragment breaks inside, it often jams the anti-theft position and prevents starting. Extraction is done with an inverted curved hook. On some models (Peugeot 207, Citroën C3 I), the ignition switch must be removed to release the fragment. Allow 45-90 minutes for this specific case.
Should I keep the broken fragment that sticks out?
Absolutely. If part of the key still sticks out of the lock, do not touch it and do not pull on it with pliers. Any clumsy traction pushes the fragment deeper into the barrel, breaks the pins or twists the remaining blade. Cover the lock with a piece of tape so a passer-by doesn't try to remove the piece, and wait for our technician.
What happens if the blade breaks flush with the lock cylinder?
This is the most technical case. When the break occurs flush with the barrel, there is no surface to grip the fragment. We then use a 0.8 mm micro drill to make a tiny pilot hole in the fragment's metal, then insert a reverse extraction screw that acts as an anchor. Duration: 25 to 50 minutes. The success rate without cylinder replacement is around 75%.
Does a night call-out cost more?
Yes, the night call-out surcharge (22:00–06:00) or bank-holiday surcharge ranges from €59 to €129 depending on area and distance. This surcharge is disclosed on the phone before dispatch, never added to the invoice after the fact. In very dense areas (central Paris, central Brussels, Lyon Part-Dieu), the night surcharge is often reduced to €39 thanks to the immediate availability of a local technician.
