Keys inside the vehicle: what really happens
The internal statistics from our dispatch teams are telling: "keys locked in" is our number-one call-out reason during the week, ahead of total loss and broken keys. Out of 100 calls, around 62% concern a door that locked while the keys were left on the seat, in the glovebox or — the most stressful scenario — in the ignition with the engine off. The rest is split between Hands-Free fobs that ended up in the boot, and involuntary auto-locking events (typical of recent VW, Audi and Mercedes models).
Auto-lock deserves a special mention. On a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan, for example, automatic locking is triggered as soon as the vehicle detects the Comfort Access key more than 1.5 m away for 60 seconds. You step out to charge your car at a supermarket, the key slips from your pocket into the cabin while you close the door, you move a few seconds away to fetch your bank card from the backpack leaning against the car: by the time you return, everything is locked. We handle this case on average 4 to 6 times per day across the Île-de-France area.
🚸 Life-threatening emergency: child or pet inside
If your child or pet is locked inside the vehicle and the outside temperature is above 25°C or below 5°C, call 18 (FR) or 112 (BE/NL) immediately. The fire brigade is equipped to break a window quickly if needed — and that is the right call if there is a risk to life.

Professional non-destructive opening methods
Our trade isn't simply "opening", it's "opening cleanly". There are four main families of techniques, chosen according to the vehicle model, year, and locking system.

What we never do: insert a plastic wedge into the window, slide a twisted wire between the seal and the bodywork, or use a "slim jim" on a post-2005 vehicle. These methods are outdated and risk triggering the alarm, damaging the window sensors or, worse — on recent vehicles, severing the door wiring harness routed through the upper corner.

Good to know: do NOT try these "internet tips"
The shoelace trick (sliding a knotted shoelace through the door gap to catch the locking button): works on a 1996 Mégane I. On any vehicle made after 2003, you'll twist the seal, trigger the alarm and catch nothing — modern buttons are flat and electronic.
The pierced tennis ball on the lock: it's a piece of fake news that has been circulating since 2007. No lock cylinder can be opened by air pressure. You'll only damage the seal.
The wooden wedge jammed into the door: causes permanent deformation of the door frame and can break the seal clip. Bodywork repair: €300-500.

Frequent questions — vehicle opening
Can DKP open any car model?
Practically all of them, yes. Our technician fleet covers more than 120 brands and hundreds of models, from 1990s city cars (Twingo I, 106) to 2025 electric SUVs (Tesla Model Y, ID.4, EQS). The hardest vehicles are factory-armoured models (Mercedes Guard, BMW High Security) which require a strengthened identity protocol and a longer time slot.
Does keyless opening leave any marks?
No, provided the right method is chosen. Our technicians favour Lishi picking on accessible lock cylinders, pneumatic air wedge (5-7 PSI maximum) on models with flexible door frames, and a sheathed carbon reach tool to actuate the interior handle. No marks, no airbag deployment, no scratches on the seal. The bodywork is inspected with you before and after the job.
Do I need ID and the vehicle registration document?
Yes, it's a legal requirement. Our technician will ask for valid photo ID and, where possible, the vehicle registration document (V5). If the registration document is itself locked inside (a common case), we cross-check: a photo of the number plate, a digital insurance certificate, or third-party corroboration. No opening takes place without verification that you are the owner or legitimate user.
Does my insurance cover unlocking a locked vehicle?
Very often. The majority of motoring assistance policies (Direct Assurance, MAIF, Allianz, Axa, AG Insurance) include a 'keys locked in' cover offering one or two call-outs per year. The usual ceiling is €150 to €250. DKP issues an itemised invoice in your name, compatible with your claim. Call your assistance line before the job to validate direct billing.
What if a child or pet is locked inside the car?
Call the fire brigade first (18 in France, 112 in Belgium and the Netherlands) and DKP in parallel. If the outside temperature is above 25°C or below 5°C, do not wait a second: the fire brigade will break a window if the opening delay exceeds 5 minutes. DKP averages 25 to 40 minutes on this type of absolute emergency. Stay close to the vehicle, talk to the child or pet to reassure them, and shade the car from the sun if you can.
Why does my car lock itself?
Three typical causes. First: the 'auto-lock' function enabled by default on recent Volkswagen, Mercedes and Audi models, which locks the doors as soon as the vehicle detects the key moving away. Second: a BCM (Body Control Module) fault that misreads the door sensor signal — common on Renault Mégane III and Captur 2014-2017. Third: a centralised locking glitch caused by a weak 12V battery, especially on Toyota hybrids.
Will an expert report show signs of break-in?
No. Our methods leave no mechanical trace on the lock cylinder or seals. No insurance expert can distinguish a Lishi-opened lock from one opened with the original key. That's precisely why the police and fire brigades call on technicians from our trade when they need to access a vehicle without the key.
How long before the alarm goes off during the opening?
Modern anti-theft alarms trigger on cabin movement or forced opening attempts. Our methods (Lishi, air wedge) trigger nothing: they mimic a legitimate key acting on the cylinder. Once the door is open, the alarm may sound for 5 to 15 seconds depending on the model, the time needed to present a valid key or — for Keyless vehicles — to send the disarm command via OBD if the key is left inside with a dead battery.
